The surprising announcement came after Mandela had been in hospital several times the last few months, and after a lengthy discussion with former American president Bill Clinton, who takes a special interest in Africa.
“I realise my time left to guide South Africa is limited,” Mandela said. “I have decided to take action before it is too late. To save this country from the incompetence and corruption of the African National Congress party which I am a member of and which unfortunately has had a monopoly on power since the end of Apartheid, I am reintroducing white rule in the form of Bill Clinton.”
“My party and I had every opportunity when we were handed the country in 1994. But we messed up. We have had 20 years to fix this country already. The idea was to lift black prosperity to the level of whites. Not to reduce the whites to the poverty of blacks. So something needs to be done before we become another failed African state.”
“I am appointing Bill Clinton to president of South Africa for life. Clinton is competent and he does not take bribes, which is more than I can say about most of our own politicians. I am aware of Clinton’s womanising, but by African standards that is no big deal. Our outgoing President Zuma has six wives and 19 children. In any case, we expect Clinton to bring his wife Hillary, who will keep both him and South Africa in check.”
Bill Clinton said in a statement that he was proud of becoming dictator of a country as diverse and vibrant as South Africa.
